Dans la rue…In the street…

It is always fun to walk on a large street, closed to cars, this time it was for a peace march, held in Winnpeg, in May 1982. It is quite pleasant to walk down these streets, new perspectives are there to exploit for photography, I did like the view I was getting in this shot, the large street bordered by buildings, creating some kind of vanishing perspective, it was nice also to walk and knowing you did not have to care about cars, although I must say that in all English Canadian cities, car drivers do respect religiously the crossing passage for pedestrian, and in return the pedestrian won’t cross on a red light, or between two intersections, I came and live in Montreal, jaywalking is a way of life here, and sometimes dangerous, a battle…:) ok not that bad, but pedestrians, cyclists and drivers all think they are kings of the street…sometimes it can get hazardous to cross a street or a bike path…the first few weeks I got called by policemen on foot, late at night I was crossing a small, desert street on a red light…they probably though I was a tourist, they let me go without getting a ticket….:), so the picture.

Here in Quebec, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste, is a more celebrated day, it is the ‘fête nationale des québécois’ it was a week ago, today for many quebecers, it is…moving day, the rent lease are all due for renewal July 1 st, so if you decide not to stay where you are, it is a day many peoples are moving to a new apartment, and here in Montreal, about 60 % of the population aren’t owners, so a lot of movement on Canada Day, besides, you can ‘move’ the Holiday, so quite a few people were off yesterday and work today….it is not the same in the rest of Canada, so those pics were taken during my ‘Winnegers’ years…so here’s a few photos celebrating the ‘unifolié’ the Canadian Flag.

Unfortunately, my focus wasn’t good for the little flag…but I did added a few more, not taken on Canada Day celebrations, but showing the flag…two are from my apartment, the other was taken, a couple resting after a peace walk.

It was not the first peace walk that happen, it wont be the last either, many more will probably occur, there is just too many stupid ass…sorry, who just cannot accept any differences and do consider anything that doesn’t think like themselves like something to be defeated or conquered….I guess it is part of the human nature…back to this one, this was in June 1982, in Winnipeg, I did take part to this one, first by belief and second to use the occasion of photographing  my new fellows Winnipegers, normally I don’t feel comfortable taking pictures of strangers, either alone or in a small group, but when it is not the same in a large crowd, somehow I feel that people know they me be the subject for an amateur photographer like me, or a professional one and even maybe the subject of interest of surveillance agency…:), but it is probably my paranoiac side, it is faint, but we all have one I think

A photo taken from a plane window, I am not sure exactly when it was taken, but it was either the first flight, that was taking me to Winnipeg for the first time, or another in roughly the same period, but when I look at it now, the road crossing  describe a bit what was about to happen over the next five years, moving from Montreal to Winnipeg, learning English and a new culture, the other solitude as we say in Canada, I was about to travel quite often North, and eventually all that lead to my sabbatical year travel overs Western Europe, and I was almost forgetting about that, I started drawing and painting…photography, that I was already doing.

Winnipeg…my appartment

When I arrived in Winnipeg I lived in a very small apartment…and it was the view I had waking up in my sofa-bed in the living room, bedroom and more. A few things bought up north, souvenirs, a black and white print developped in my makeshift darkroom,  a canadian flag that my friends had given me when I left Montreal, two years earlier I did vote OUI for the Quebec sovereignty referendum…well it is history now..:)

Mon 2e chez-moi….

I had three or four home so far in my life, some short one, 4 months in Vienna, some station up north, 4 years in Winnipeg and forever in Montreal, so a few first pics from one of these homes, Winnipeg, in june 1983, two  pics I found, misplaced, they were taken during or actually at the end of a anti-nuclear weapons demonstration, at that time the Ussr was deploying SS-20 missiles, the USA were responding with Cruise missiles testing, they were also talking about an anti-missile shield from space…it was a cold very cold war…and in many cities peoples were marching for peace, so this was the arrival of the demonstration in front of the Manitoban Legislative building, and it did ended up in some pretty nice show and party…so the two firs pics of this other home for a while of mine….

Another nice story about Winnipeg, there is lot, but I would suggest you visit a site on wordpress of a good friend of mine,  she documented a lot of painting murals of Winnipeg, it is worth a look..
