Almost ready to lift off for Eureka, just before, a passenger changed is mind, an artic fox, maybe he was after an artic hare, or was it just a piece of dust on the slide…the fox was real, that I am sure off…but the fox had to be careful because up north, there is a legend, a kind of artic hare, called the ‘Artic Killer Hare’..but I don’t have the time to write more about this now, and it is a quite terrifying story….:)
A few shots of mountains, iced or snowy, fjords, colors were difficult to adjust on most of these pics, so I did some interpretation with photoshop, as for colors they aren’t that many at that time of the year up there….white, blue, and dark brown or black or grey…the most colorful object is probably the plane, and only the wing was visible…:)
Sometimes, during that long trip, I kind of put away my photographic apparel, in Salzburg, I was there three days and manage to take only a few pics, about 8 or 9 photos…most of them a day I went up the hill to Holhensalburg castle, it was the end of november, a bit cold, windy and raining partly, like it did for most of these days, so I probably spent more time in the Youth Hostel bar, than walking the streets, even if I did quite a bid, but just looking, no pictures….and very few tourists going around…
And a tourist, like me…funny most of the time I don’t include people in my photos, maybe the on an off photographer I am is shy, or simply more interested in graphic composition offered by places I visit, or maybe both…
A few more pics taken from this place will be shown on a forthcoming post…
I still dusting off my slides, literately…will have lot of work with photoshop, even if the ‘Ice technology’ of Epson does some work on that, so these were taken in May 1983, my first trip to the Great White North, up to Resolute bay , and further to Eureka, Northwest Territories, now known as Nunavut. I am still trying to figure out exactly where those pics were taken, I am sure about a few ones, others are a bit in the mist of my memory…1983 is a bit far, I took some notes then, but haven’t found them yet, probably I will never do, so have to rely on my sometimes sketchy memory….

Avion de transport type Hercules Transport airplane, Hercules type pas notre avion…not our plane… Resolute Bay, 1983-05

This is the one, the plane model? not sure…I am better with fashion models names…:) Resolute Bay, 1983-05
More pics will be shown, but the chronological order is a bit, a lot, messed up, I did found most of my slides, I used to keep them numbered, notes taken, but all of this is gone, so it will be like a movie with a lot of flashback or forward…and the next stop, after Resolute Bay airport was the Eureka weather station. right in the middle of Ellesmere Island, next to Greenland…way up North, in fact at this point a compass would point due west…. at least in 1983, it is always moving so right now I’m not sure where it is really…..

Fort Eureka? un endroit bien défendu! Fort Eureka? Canadian stronghold in the Artic! Eureka, 1983-05
The Canon and the fort….it was 1983, at the height of the Cold War, so if first Secretary then, Antropov, was to send in the Red Army, Canada was on guard to keep them off…:) but I think it is more like the kind of humorous things you do find in most of the northern posts…a bit of humour does help to keep the hearth and the rest warm…:)
I though that maybe a location map of these sites would be useful…to get a sense of where are these places…
In the few pics I did scan so far, I must admit I don’t have many ‘postcard’ type photos…like the ones you would show to your family and friends coming back from a trip abroad…:), so here’s one taken from the hill where the Old Castle is, a view of the Old bridge crossing the Neckar River in Heidelberg.
The bridge was partially destroyed in 1945, from what I found on the net, there’s been 9 bridges at the present site, the first one beign built in the 13 th century, apparently some part of the original foundation are still part of the actual bridge, rebuild in 1947, I guess this morning it is my old engineer formation resurfacing or maybe the part of me interest in history as a hobby, but i though providing some info bring a bit of background on this picture, If you want to learn more, I put a link ine english, there was more detailed links in french…so the pic…

Who did not dream of having his dream house, ‘petite cabane’ a quiet place, nature at the outdoor, and garbage can, for this one I had the collaboration of a long time friend, and no it is not is house…rather a backyard shed, so here’s the proof, don’t believe everything you do see on the web….:) but I thought that with not much of a scene I was able to make a nice pic, not great but decent…:), so the pic and the ‘scenic house’….

Strange as sometimes you thought as a place as a beautiful quiet place, full of serenity, the information I read at that time, in November 1986, let me believe it was some ancient construction, so when I scan these slides today, I did a bit of research, I like presenting a bit of background on some of the pictures I took, I was quite surprised to found out that place is in fact an old relic from the past, but not so far…more like in the thirties and forties, a place where young Nazis would gather, it kind of took away the sweetness I did found about this place, I guess I am better telling myself that a dark place could also be a nice place at some other times…so here’s those pictures.
If you feel reading a bit more on this here’s a few links on this site….

But for today, there will be again today’s photo, actually two of them, an old building, and on the second one a Munichian, hum not sure, ok somebody from Munich, but maybe he is from somewhere else…and anyway it was in 1986, so an old time instagram…yeah I know in that time they call that a photo, a vintage photo from not so long ago, to me rediscovered memories…
Not really a daily habit I want absolutly to follow, but I will try to post more than often photos coming from my past photographic wanderings, this one is still from Munich, in 1986, I went to visit the Fine Arts Museum, or Science Musuem, can’t remember exactly, but it was in a large park, crosses by a river, or a stream, I should say, and of course it kind of caught my eye and lense…so another pic from Munich, november 1986…time travek…:)
A few more pictures of Heidelberg’s Castle, it is beautiful, even if it was destroyed and only partly rebluilded, it was destroyed during the 30 years war, I won’t try to write an historical essay here, I will rather put some links to wikipedia in english Heidelberg Castle and in french Château d’Heidelberg. So a few more pics, taken in november 1986, or was it October, not quite sure, it was either beginning or ending of one or the other…:), some day I will write and show more pics about this period, actually spreading from 1982 to 1987, an important strech for me, left Montreal for Winnipeg, then I was going often up to the Canadian Artic weather stations, and in 1986-7, left the job and went travelling through Western Europe, including a four months stay in Vienna. but in the meantime two more pics of the Castle…
