When I saw this picture, a movie came up to my mind, a movie from 1983, about the same time I took this photo in Eureka, the movie title is ‘Never Cry Wolf’, if you feel like knowing more on this wonderful, to me at least, movie, here’s a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Never_Cry_Wolf_(film). but unlike in the movie, they had not to work so hard for their food, there was plenty leftovers in the dump….

Faut pas perdre le Nord…hum not translable…I think…

Difficult to translate….you must not lose the North, I guess you better figuring a compass, and the needle is pointing anywhere, and it does not stay at one place, true or false North…Archimède, thanks Wiki, I had written originaly Aristotle, found it and said….Eureka,, but as we know, the Vikings did venture up North, and even Mars I think, according to NASA, but not the Greeks…so he was not, Archimèdes, talking about Eureka, Nunavut, or Northwest Territories, where this photo was taken, non Mars, I’ve been there it is dusty, red and beautiful…oops I must not reveal my extraterrestrial origin…I keep forgetting….so ‘ perdre le nord’ in french could be translated as being a bit of a foolish, hopefully not disturbed person, somebody who isn’t quite normal,…good thing, I like people when they are fools, gentle just a bit odd person, fools…so a photo from Eureka, a place that will help you, wanting it or not, to become a bit different, a bit of a gentle fool, as many other beautiful places, photos have sometimes a way to make you dream, I do hope this one does a little bit this job…

If you can read both languages, I suggest you do, most of the time, I try to keep the the translation in the same mood and feelings, this time, it isn’t the case…

When you go up North the first time, lot of things are impressive, the desert look, cold , moutains, fjord, the bright sun 24 hrs a day, at the time I went the first time, and the first local inhabitants I saw, the artic hares, huge from their thick fur, but what do they eat? Not much around that seems good for them…I don’t know

All my slides are in color, but one was so badly exposed it was dark and blue, that I decided to transform it in black and white, the top one is in photoshop, the next was modified in Lightroom, I have to learn more about that software, I’m not sure what is the diffence between photoshop and Lightroom, the later one seems to have a few more tools for publishing, like making a book, have to look in to it more….

Almost ready to lift off for Eureka, just before, a passenger changed is mind, an artic fox, maybe he was after an artic hare, or was it just a piece of dust on the slide…the fox was real, that I am sure off…but the fox had to be careful because up north, there is a legend, a kind of artic hare, called the ‘Artic Killer Hare’..but I don’t have the time to write more about this now, and it is a quite terrifying story….:)

Tous les passagers…All passengers please…

A few shots of mountains, iced or snowy, fjords, colors were difficult to adjust on most of these pics, so I did some interpretation with photoshop, as for colors they aren’t that many at that time of the year up there….white, blue, and dark brown or black or grey…the most colorful object is probably the plane, and only the wing was visible…:)

I havent got wings….Tom Petty…but I’m learning to fly….:)

Ah la montagne, les plages…ah mountains and beach…l’océan..the Ocean…:)

Un peu plus….a little bit more…

I still dusting off my slides, literately…will have lot of work with photoshop, even if the ‘Ice technology’ of Epson does some work on that, so these were taken in May 1983, my first trip to the Great White North, up to Resolute bay , and further to Eureka, Northwest Territories, now known as Nunavut. I am still trying to figure out exactly where those pics were taken, I am sure about a few ones, others are a bit in the mist of my memory…1983 is a bit far, I took some notes then, but haven’t found them yet, probably I will never do, so have to rely on my sometimes sketchy memory….

This is the one, the plane model? not sure…I am better with fashion models names…:) Resolute Bay, 1983-05

Embarquement pour Eureka… Boarding plane for Eureka… Resolute Bay, 1983-05

More pics will be shown, but the chronological order is a bit, a lot, messed up, I did found most of my slides, I used to keep them numbered, notes taken, but all of this is gone, so it will be like a movie with a lot of flashback or forward…and the next stop, after Resolute Bay airport was the Eureka weather station. right in the middle of Ellesmere Island, next to Greenland…way up North, in fact at this point a compass would point due west…. at least in 1983, it is always moving so right now I’m not sure where it is really…..

Fort Eureka? un endroit bien défendu! Fort Eureka? Canadian stronghold in the Artic! Eureka, 1983-05

The Canon and the fort….it was 1983, at the height of the Cold War, so if first Secretary then, Antropov, was to send in the Red Army, Canada was on guard to keep them off…:) but I think it is more like the kind of humorous things you do find in most of the northern posts…a bit of humour does help to keep the hearth and the rest warm…:)

I though that maybe a location map of these sites would be useful…to get a sense of where are these places…
