Iceberg droit devant!….Iceberg…Straigh Ahead…

Of course they did not ‘meet’, both went their way, at least for the helicopter, who kept flying, and the helico occupants were probably quite happy with that, as for the iceberg, eventually it will follow its journey but not before a few months, in the meantime it did stayed stuck in the ice….

Les montagnes près d’Eureka…/Mountains nearby Eureka….

Photo

Close to the station there is many nice valleys and mountains, this place is almost a paradise, a cold one, but nonetheless, you do have a nice feeling being out there to look at something not many peoples will have the chance to see, and when you get tired of this there is always the possibility to stroll along the Fjord coast, of course after a few months, you start missing south and home, but still this is a beautiful place.

In the meantime, one of my collegue and friend was taking a short rest, while i was shooting all around.

Nouveaux albums photo…New photo album

No new pics today, no time yesterday, so a bit of moving around in the albums, copied pics from the album ‘photos du Nord’ to new albums for Mould Bay and Eureka weather stations, the link…

Il y a quelqu’un?…Anybody out there?…

The only link we had at the time with the South, besides a plane or the boat that was coming once a year to the station, the satellite was lying just barely above the horizon…

Pour se rafraîchir….to cool down ourselves…

Hot and humid in Montreal these days, and days like that I am missing the time i was up North, I can’t support the heat, especially when humidity is adding to the feeling, I could move to Kuujjaak, but even there along the Ungava Bay, it’s been overs 30 degrees for three days now, their first ‘canicule’ since weather records are taken, so I guess I have to try to refresh my mind as well as my memory with another Iceberg’s pic…..

Chaud et humide ici…je rêve à cela…Eureka, mars 1984 Hot and humid here, I am missing this today…Eureka, march 1984

An Arctic Jaeger or Parasetic Jeager, I don’t know if it is the North or scarcity of food but these birds are quite voracious, our cook when he tried to cook steaks on the BBQ had to intervene….these birds were trying to take away the meat, I don’t know either if it was our cook with his tools up in the air, or the heat from the grill or just the heavyweight steak, but these attacks would always fail….on other occasion I saw a strange battle between Gulls and these Jaeger, but it was fierce in the air as on the ground, each giving each other strong beak hits, they were fighting over some frozen chicken we had to disposed off, their time was due and after a year they had to be put to the dump, quite a show….

L’iceberg d’à côté…Your neighboring Iceberg..

Every time winter would come back in Eureka, there was a high probability that some iceberg would be trapped in the fjord, that winter we were lucky, there was one almost on the door front of the station, figure of speech, it was about 20 minutes to walk there, although a frozen fjord could be a bit hazardous, no large holes, but enough to hurt an ankle or a knee, going through the snow that filled the jagged ice, but it was a worthwhile risk to take, a not so big risk after all, just have to be cautious, and that year no polar bear were sight nearby the station…

No, I am not writing about me, but rather this lonely wolf on the photo, that photo was taken during a  trip around the station, to the dump exactly, not the  most beautiful site, but wolves living nearby the station, love it, especially the cook had to trow out to the garbage, old weak muskox could be a feast for them , but not easy to find, the garbage from the station kitchen were much more appreciated…

But it is not entirely true, he is alone on this pic, but his buddies aren’t far away, on a next photo will see…

La chose…The Thing…

There was some of those days, and up there they can last up to six months, or is it these days?, this is one of the English language fine detail I had and will never master I guess, but I am french so I guess this is ok…., so back to this day, that maybe, the only thing I could though is, ‘Kriss, faut que je parte d’icitte…’ translated from french quebecois as ‘put in the swear of your choice’ and … I got to get out of here….!!!!’ Honestly, thirty years later I can’t tell what was my mood on that day, maybe I just want to go away, or maybe I was thankful for being there and enjoying something very few people had the opportunity to live…or maybe you can imagine something similar to John Carpenter The Thing’ movie’s…and on that helicopter is a mad man trying to shoot a dog…but of course it is not a dog, just a dangerous polymorph extra-terrestrial entity escaping the station, but as an extraterrestrial being marooned on this planet for a while, I don’t think it is the case, at least it is not from a known species on my planet…:)

It is the name of the mountain range that is about 60 km east of Eureka, in Nunavut, they are quite magnificent, although we never did flew directly over them, unfortunately this photo, taken from the window of the Twin Otter that was taking us to the station doesn’t really show how beautiful the sight was. I probably do have other slides not yet scanned, that show them under better conditions, in the meantime I have this one photo to show…
