The only painting in the ‘in progress’ section started as an acrylic painting and still is, not that the urge to switch to oil wasn’t there, but I though that once in a while, I had to try to finish one in this medium….again quite a few drawings problems, and did not like the shading, contrast, and as I like to do often, I added in the previous session part of the model, her face in the background, but I don’t know, it doesn’t feel right, so it went out….and this one to will be around for the beginning of 2014…the signature is coming soon, I think…therefore…whatever…:)

Of course, I could not resist a few days later to improve it…some things are better, but many more went wrong, not completely lost, but I will have some repainting to do, get back some of the previous colors and contrast, in short trying to really improve it this time…

Of course you probably guess that I meant spent the day before and yesterday painting this one, some day everything just go so smoothly and well, that time pass like a breeze, everything seens to fall in place and go without any effort…or so little. When that happen, you feel you’re like in a Painter’s Nirvana….:)

/The most recent version of this painting and my paper muse who took me for those two whole days…:)

Videos….

Updated the ‘Making of page video’, with 2 movies published for this Lonneke Engel painting, 2 more to do...the link

Of course, it is kind of revealing the end…but you’ve seen it before, so it is not like when somebody is telling you how the movie finish while you are at mid-point of viewing it, feel like the first movie, mixed of animation and real actors of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ which ended up right in the middle of the story…:)

For a start, links to part I and II, maybe you did not read them, or it is kind of hazy…..

Lonneke – part/partie I
Lonneke – part/partie II

From where we were in june 2006, all seems to go relatively smooth, it is not apparent of course that it wasn’t so, first I switch to oil and Liquin, and then I was having lot of problem with the tacky surface of the painting, the long delays between sessions, often many weeks, so dust was adding to the problem, and I had a lot of trouble to get her pose correctly, and often proportions were good but I lost them trying to correct the pose

Another 2 years of work, August 2008…still getting closer but not as rapidly as I was hoping

On top of that, I was having quite a lot of difficulties getting the pose right, it seems to me that either I had the proportions right but not the pose, then trying to correct that I was losing the proportions, my drawing skills were not that good, or it was just out of my reach at that point to control that. And besides at that period I was quite a good, too good drinker, so often I was having few, and more than often many beers, in the first stage, you feel your movement are flying, and often I though I had a breakthrough, that it was very good…that is until I look at it the next morning…I guess my gesture was a bit too free at the end of night, so more than often I had to correct and repaint….

Another two years went by, and I was rapidly approaching the date of an exhibition I was planning at home, so I decided it was ok, and I signed it, a first time, its was September 2010…:) of course you already know it wasn’t over yet….

Another session on this painting of an unknown model or muse, wearing sunglasses and thighboots, a very soft looking painting, did not ‘push’ too much colors and details yet, and maybe, just maybe I will keep it simple, try not to overwork it, like it does happen sometimes…all the times some would say…:), in fact I think very little is missing on this one, maybe another session to finish it

It was my first day at work this year, back to reality and the grind….and the not so funny feeling that time is too short to work, paint and write a few post, and everything that goes with it…I do have quite a few post in draft mode, it is almost getting to be a mess, ok I’m used to that so well back to painting, tonight, it is January 6 th, ‘la Fête des Rois’ don’t know if you have the equivalent, it used to celebrate the three kings, not the movie, but the three ‘wiseguys’ who went to offer Jesus, a baby child then, encens, myrrhe and others thing…not that wise to offer that for a new born…well back to la fête des rois, then there must be a queen…a woman, so I thought that maybe I should work on a painting of my queen, I almost in love with that painting, I know I should let people tell it is nice, but I saying it right away, so here’s the latest version of this painting of the queen of my muses, Liz Hurley, like I said I almost in love with this painting, and her, but back to reality, not very mentally sound to be in love with a painting or a pic, speaking of pics, the painting and a photograph of my queen…:)

It is cold and windy tonight, like it is in most of North America these days, so after a long walk back from work, what’s better to get warm than go to the easel and serve my queen…:) so another version of this painting, almost finished but not quite…next time…

And I can’t wait to show it so I will post it right now…Et je ne peux attendre pour la montrer, alors aussi bien le faire ce soir, comme là tout-de-suite…

Et bien sûr le diaporama/Of course the slideshow

Souriante?

Another one of these paintings that are lingering, well this one will pass to 2014 without being signed yet….You start knowing me, sometimes I get a little bit obsessed with smal details, but noneless important details, at least to me, especially wheh I’m loosing her face, better than to lose it myself, but I think it is back now, and the hands are getting ok…so I guess it will be another session before I get to the point where this painting will be signed…

Of course, there is a slideshow, waiting the signature for the making of film….

Another painting, who’s been on the ‘sideline’ for a while, did a bit on painting on it in november, the model comtess Monique is wearing a grey leather tailleur, and of course boots matching her outfit. I’m still undecided if I will make a more ‘standard’ painting, following the original picture, or if I will do as I like to do more and more often, reproducing part of the model at different places on the canvas, playing with more or less shaded copies, the debate is still open, for now it look like I will go for adding more…I will reworked it in a few days, will see…

The two pictures I made to illustrate the two possibilities, If I keep the portrait, it will probably be softer, shaded, the question is still open…of course you can express your thoughs, I will consider them but I will do as usual…go my own way…:)

Also I have this one, maybe it would be a good direction to go….

The second part of this painting story, for the first part see Lonneke part I

As it is the case for many of my paintings, it started as an acrylic painting, each time telling that I will master this medium, nothing wrong with this, and over the years I did start feeling more and more confortable with this medium; but at that time I had some sort of misconception about acrylic, I though that since it is drying fast, I could easily repair mistakes, drawing mistakes, so I was favorising a quick start, and not paying too much attention at the fact that everything was in the right place, but when you do like painting bodies like I do, it is for the least a recipe for disaster….:)

I started this painting on July 12, 2003 and this picture was taken on July 5…2005, usually I took many pictures to record the steps, I did….but did not do back ups….

…and computer did crash, so I lost all the early pics…sometimes we do mistakes, drawing mistakes, composition mistakes, or too many changes, and on top of that safe data keeping practice not good, actuallly I had none…now I do take many more precautions…:)

And then more steps, sideway, backtracking, adding things, removing things, parts of her body were painted here and there, taken off here and there, so a lot of repainting, which is not a good thing to keep a painting sponataneous, clean….to say the least, and during those years, my drawings skills were, well not so good, today they are better but still need improvment…they always will need.

23 juillet 2006….July 23 rd, 2006

A bit upset, with my composition and drawing skills, and the way I tough working with acrylic were hindering my work, I decided to move to oil, usually it does not cause any or very few problems, this time it wasn’t the case, maybe partly because I tried a new medium, Liquin, I don’t know, but the canvas became very sticky, the brushes would not flow easily and I was getting more upset with this painting, so I decided to simplify it, so out of the way went the background, less distracting, less is better they say…..and well, it was hard but it seems to me that it was getting better…the only thing left was to bring back her face, some contrast, details in her skirt and boots….

After 4 years, maybe 60 hrs of painting, I though I was coming close to sign this painting…foolish thought…:)

Le vidéo à ce point-ci du tableau/the making of for this painting so far….

There will be 2 more posts on this painting history….so more to come in a few days…or weeks

For the last two days I’ve been writing many drafts for future posts, either to present old stuff that are still on the backlog list, or the more recent ones, all that in prevision that I know I won’t so much time once work, real work I mean my job, will resume, and I had a certain order planned, but I must change that. Started a new painting yesterday, the first in 2014, officially…and I am quite excited about it, it is in his very first stages, look very abstract, they always do when I started them, will it stay that way, don’t know, but it is very tempting…but first I like to show the pic which inspired this new painting, reworked in photoshop you would have know just looking at it…

And the original photo founded on Pinterest and coming from angelstyle.com

The first few steps were painted using the rest of a previous acrylic paint palette, mixed with gesso, and drawing very loosely the shapes according to the previous photograph, trying to get the feeling of the pose, blocking areas of lights and darks, so far it is looking good, but of course it is kind of matte, that should be better later…:)
