A photo after the storm has left, nothing special for a weather station up in the arctic, but it was July 1984, it was 32 degrees celcius in Toronto, warm and humid, here in Mould Bay it was minus 6, usually we have a few months where the snow is gone, little flowers grow and it does look like a cool , but sunny summer…more like spring….but this day the short live arctic summer took a break….and that morning when I did push the heavy door of our barrack I though I wasn’t quite awake when I felt something like blowing snow in my face….

La tête dans les nuages…Head up in the sky

In the style of photographs taken from above, here’s another one, not sure where it was, somewhere between Winnipeg and Montreal I presume, between earth and sky and above the clouds…no long story today, just a pic on my lunch time here at the office…

It can be almost anywhere, it is not uncommon to find a boat reflecting into the water, always appealing for a photographer, at least me…, usually it is mostly where they stand, along a wharf, this one could be anywhere, a hint, it is not a gondola, but there are many of them not too far away….

It is the name of the mountain range that is about 60 km east of Eureka, in Nunavut, they are quite magnificent, although we never did flew directly over them, unfortunately this photo, taken from the window of the Twin Otter that was taking us to the station doesn’t really show how beautiful the sight was. I probably do have other slides not yet scanned, that show them under better conditions, in the meantime I have this one photo to show…

It was not the first peace walk that happen, it wont be the last either, many more will probably occur, there is just too many stupid ass…sorry, who just cannot accept any differences and do consider anything that doesn’t think like themselves like something to be defeated or conquered….I guess it is part of the human nature…back to this one, this was in June 1982, in Winnipeg, I did take part to this one, first by belief and second to use the occasion of photographing  my new fellows Winnipegers, normally I don’t feel comfortable taking pictures of strangers, either alone or in a small group, but when it is not the same in a large crowd, somehow I feel that people know they me be the subject for an amateur photographer like me, or a professional one and even maybe the subject of interest of surveillance agency…:), but it is probably my paranoiac side, it is faint, but we all have one I think

D’un aéroport à un port…From an airport to a port…

I must admit I am attracted to planes, boats, and consequently to airport and port, can’t say I did use them extensively, except for a period of 5 years, but I always like walking along ports, maybe because as airports are, they are a gateway to others place, somewhere else…and a door to feeling a change of scene, although I don’t want it to be too drastic, I feel more comfortable if I can read the alphabet, even if the language is unknown to me, and usually french, English and a bit of German does help you getting around, at least Europe, so all of this to came to say that this is the Cherbourg’s Port, I kind of escape Paris…too hot and busy, I wanted to go to Bretagne, went to the wrong train station and end up in Chergbourg, it was what I needed, cooler, calmer…

Aznavour did sing about the umbrellas in Cherbourg, but me, I only found a port, some bistros, a youth hostel and a cycling shop where I bought a bicycle…

A photo taken from a plane window, I am not sure exactly when it was taken, but it was either the first flight, that was taking me to Winnipeg for the first time, or another in roughly the same period, but when I look at it now, the road crossing  describe a bit what was about to happen over the next five years, moving from Montreal to Winnipeg, learning English and a new culture, the other solitude as we say in Canada, I was about to travel quite often North, and eventually all that lead to my sabbatical year travel overs Western Europe, and I was almost forgetting about that, I started drawing and painting…photography, that I was already doing.

Usually I prefer using the picture as it is, no framing or cropping, but sometimes it does allow to take care of a photo not so well framed, for all kind of reasons, bad decision or simply you have to cope with what you have, time, position, equipment…so this is one case I try it, the last post photo, I wanted to frame it more closely on the flower, the result…

Of course, looking at the original, it is more apparent that this pic was taken in Venice, as there is not so many hint on the cropped picture, I guess both have their charm, but I do prefer the cropped one…but I have to clean up a bit more dust, it wasn’t so apparent on the original…

Another black and white picture of Venice, a flower on the gondola side, only the lovers that will be flowing down the Great Canal are missing….

May as well keep going on with this morning post and flight, actually I am not sure if we were landing or taking off, but on this pic you can see the reason why we had to go there, a weather station, part of the international high atmosphere study network, twice a day , a weather balloon, inflated with hydrogen would be launched and while it went up to 100 km high into the atmosphere, it was relaying all kinds of meteorological data, which would be used to make long term weather forecast by studying how the Jet Stream was behaving. For my part I did not go to this particular station often, in fact this was the only time, this one was ‘too south’ for us to take in a crew, the Inuit administration was taking care of building and road maintenance, we would go there for the equipment, and this was not my field of expertise, in fact I am not sure what was my field of expertise…I was there to plan the work, do a bit of measuring, taking notes, answering crew men questions, helping them if I can, so I guess I was a bit of a Jack of all trades, and expert in none, so sometimes I just took pictures, just for the fun of being there and feeling very lucky to be there.

So I think, unless my memory is failing me, that these are the only two photos I have of this place…
