No, not a seagull as well known or special as Jonathan Livingston the Seagull, just an ordinary seagull living near Eureka, up north, although they were fierce fighters, sometimes with the Jaegers, or even with our cook, those rare days where he was able to cook some steaks on the BBQ, him and his seagulls friends would try to snatch the steaks off the BBQ hot grill, and take off with the meat, the cook was waving them away with his knifes and long forks…a real show, but not as good as the one we had when we had to dump some old frozen chicken to the dump, there was a real battle between the Jeagers and the Seagull, each one trying to make the other loose his precious deep frozen prey….

A creek is running close to the station, when the snow is melting, it does provide the water supply, partly, for the station, and since  It is not a major waterway, it is unnamed, so to us it was ‘Station Creek’….so a picture of the creek flowing into the larger Fjord by the station.

Under this strange dome, lay a radar who his sole purpose it to track weather balloons that are launch twice a day, all around the globe at the same time, these weather help tracking the jet stream, and by doing so, help meteorologists to prepare their forecast, me I was there just to look over the work that would be done next summer, it was May 1983, ‘Spring Break’ in Eureka…with a mild -20 Celsius…:)

Humour arctique….Arctic Humour…

Don’t wait too long at this railroad crossing rigth in the middle of nowhere, actually close to the landing strip in Eureka, Nunavut, of course don’t look to book a trip by train to go upthere….:) it is more like one of the  numerous pranks, or familiar southern objects that are implemented here and there up north, a way to laugh about the remoteness of these arctic stations I guess…:)

Mis à l’écart…Cast away

http://jmro-art.net/2014/10/11/tritesse-sorrowful/

What is the relation between this photo of an husky dog and the title you may ask yourself, if you saw and remember a previous post you know, the link to this post, in short this dog was the ancient leader of the pack, his partner died, and he was sort of cast away by the rest of the pack, so it was always following us, maybe he wanted to be with us, or looking for our protection or simply staying as far as possible from the others dogs who were mean to him. I like this pic, I found it beautiful even if the situation wasn’t… You may also wonder what is this funny stuff on the wall, it is an insulation material sprayed on the building, polyurethane foam, normally it is a pale yellow, but when left exposed without covering material, the sun made it turn to a dark orange color.

Iceberg droit devant!….Iceberg…Straigh Ahead…

Of course they did not ‘meet’, both went their way, at least for the helicopter, who kept flying, and the helico occupants were probably quite happy with that, as for the iceberg, eventually it will follow its journey but not before a few months, in the meantime it did stayed stuck in the ice….

Renard tache…Fuzzy Fox…

I wish this fox, sitting on this snow bank top would look more like a fox and less like some fuzzy spot on my picture, so I guess you will have to take my word on this one and believe it is an arctic fox and not just some blurry fuzzy spot on my slide…I guess my scanner do have some limits…even when scanning to high resolution….

Les montagnes près d’Eureka…/Mountains nearby Eureka….

Photo

Close to the station there is many nice valleys and mountains, this place is almost a paradise, a cold one, but nonetheless, you do have a nice feeling being out there to look at something not many peoples will have the chance to see, and when you get tired of this there is always the possibility to stroll along the Fjord coast, of course after a few months, you start missing south and home, but still this is a beautiful place.

In the meantime, one of my collegue and friend was taking a short rest, while i was shooting all around.

La baie de….The bay of….Mould Bay

Winter is slowing showing is foregard here, maybe that’s why I feel like putting one more pic from Mould Bay, it was still summer there, but that year summer up there felt more like late fall here….

Tritesse…Sorrowful…

Photo

We had dogs on each of the main Arctic Weather stations, and in this case, it was a very sad situation, his ‘friend’ was gone, don’t know how, but the others dogs, took over the ‘leadership’ of the pack, apparently he and his departed ‘friend’ were the pack leaders, and now he was outcast, always staying close to us, the others dogs were mean to him, I heard that after a while, he was run over by some heavy equipment, the other dogs were chasing him….seems that in that way, they are a bit like us, or at least some of us..he look sorrowful on this pic…maybe he did know what woul happen…
